As you are playing this game you need items to stay alive and defend yourself if you find any weapons or supplys to stay alive if you go up to your weapon you should see a Green Back Pack Icon Then you can simply pick up the weapon by pressing the "E" Button on your keyboard.
As you are wondering around the map for items you will eventually find a town or city. these are big advantages for you to go in the town and look around for any items that you can use to defend your self. its always important that you have a weapon with you.
